Both of my parents were Corsairs originally hailing from Al Zahbi. A few days after my 10th birthday my father was killed by a troll raid on the city. At the time me and my mother were both sheltered under our house in the hopes of going undetected. After hours of relentless blitzing our home forces were victorious in holding back the opposing armies. Me and my mother didn't dare leave our safe hold for hours even after the battles had ended. It was then that Skyserpent General Rughadjeen, the mighty Elvaan Paladin, knocked on our door to bring us the grave news. We shouted to him to get his attention and he beckoned for us to come out into the light. As he detailed my fathers last moments, rather than sadness, I felt a great sense of pride. It was my father that had struck the final blow against the terrible troll general. Men, women and children all across Al Zahbi owed there lives to my father. As Rughadjeen started to make his way back to Ulthalam Parade I looked to my mothers eyes. I could see into her soul, and see what she had planned.
We returned into the house and she instructed me to collect my most prized possessions and enough food, water and medicines for a long journey. No more than 5 minutes had passed before we were aboard a ferry to the port town of Mhaura. This would be the furthest I had ever been from home. Aboard the ship I met many other families who had lost a loved one and were seeking a new life on a new continent. I slept for alot of the journey but after about 3 hours of sea faring I was awoken to the thump of a mighty Kraken on the upper deck. Being inquisitive by nature I wanted to go up and find out what was going on. But my mother instructed me to stay in my bed and so I did. She went to check that everyone was alright. She opened the deck and the mighty sea creature immediately became aggressive toward her. She reached for her gun and found that she only had 4 bullets. She had to make them count. She fired quickly and accurately at the beast but it barely took a scratch. This monster was stronger than she was used to back home. The beast struck back at my mother, she fell to the ground without ever making a sound. I watched devastated through the open door way. As it made its way down into the cabin a mighty Galkan warrior by the name of Crying Wind blocked its path. And with a tremendous grunt plunged his axe deep into the monsters skull. It let out a roar and crashed to the ground. I ran up the stairs to tend to my mother but I was too late. She too had fallen victim to the wrath of monsters. I stood alone for a while looking out to sea before Crying Wind came over to me. He explained that he was an Iron Musketeer charged with overseeing the conquest of Bastok and thats where he was going. I in turn told him my story and he offered to take me with him. I felt safe with him, and with nowhere else to go, I accepted and we made our way to Bastok.
We arrived in Mhaura at high noon in the middle of summer. It was the most unbearable heat I ever experienced, but Crying Wind seemed relatively unaffected. The galka are typically a slow moving race both in and out of battle, but he was different. He had many responsibilities to his nation, so we were to move at lightning pace. There were a share of beastmen who thought they could get the better of him but all were fatally mistaken.
I tired quickly in the heat and couldn't hold my self up by the time we reached the border to the Konschtat Highlands. The powerful Galka without saying a word lifted me onto his back and continued on his way back to Bastok. I soon fell asleep and only awoke to the sound of the hustle and bustle of a city centre. A sound I had missed over the past few days.
It was far cooler in Bastok and I immediately felt at home. I explored the city a bit, and found myself fascinated by all the different chocobos adventurers were raising. After a bit of exploration Crying Wind summoned me back to him at the gate and instructed me to take a letter to the President in the Presidents Office. I got a lot of funny looks as I approached the big wooden doors, but I ignored them for the most part. I softly knocked on the door and was instructed to enter. The President let out a chuckle as I came in and I immediately handed him the letter without letting out a sound. He opened it and read through the papers. He sat me down and consoled me for my loss that was detailed in the letters. As I soon discovered also among the papers were forms for my adoption by Crying Wind and forms to change my national allegiance to that of Bastok. Without a second thought I agreed to both. I returned to Crying Wind and he had no expression on his face, something I would soon get used to. He handed me a key to his house and told me we would talk about the day later.
I couldn't sleep when I arrived in my new adopted fathers house, and after what seemed like a lifetime Crying Wind opened the door and sat me down without saying a thing. We talked into the night about my future and my past. He told me he would raise me as his own to be a great warrior like himself, and that one day I might be an Iron Musketeer. I was buzzing with excitement. But then he told me it would not be until my 16th birthday that I would be allowed to get involved in live combat. I went to bed disappointed, but also excited about what the future would hold. I swore that night to avenge the deaths of my mother and father. When I had trained sufficiently, I would return to Al Zahbi and fight the invading forces to the death....
At the age of 16 I stepped out of Bastoks walls with a purpose. My story begins here....
First Steps
My first steps outside of Bastoks walls were fairly uneventful. The last 6 years of rigorous dry run training that Master Crying Wind had given me had paid off and I quickly felt strong enough to tackle some of the higher ranked beastmen. I found myself in Dangruf Wadi, and without a map I needed to be cautious. I spotted a lizard not far ahead of me, it didn't seem too strong, but I was prepared nevertheless, the lizard was almost defeated when 2 more lizards began to approach me, I knew they would attack me if they saw me killing there brother, but foolishly I kept slogging away at it. They quickly preceded to attack me, just as I finished off the first Lizard he let a terrible venom out of his mouth and I immediately felt weakened. I fought away at the two remaining lizards and killed them with relative ease. I could still feel the effects of the lizards poison so I made my way back to Bastok to talk to Master Crying Wind. I felt gradually weaker and weaker as I made my way back and not moments after stepping through the gate did I collapse to the ground.
I awoke in Crying Wind's house and saw a rare flash of emotion in his face. I could see that he cared deeply for me. He was more than a coach, after 6 years he was my father.
I stood up but felt very weak, Crying Wind assured me it would pass in time. I was anxious to get back outside and hone my skills, but Crying Wind was scared for my safety. I assured him I would not be so reckless next time and made my way to the Auction House to get some new gear.
The auction house prices I was not prepared for, with nothing more than the clothes on my back and about 60gil in my pocket I was a poor man. I asked various adventurers about there sources of income and was typically greeted with the response to kill monsters and loot there bodies. I went outside and right by the gate I saw the body of a fallen comrade who had been felled by the Rock Eater just beside him. I ran forward and unsheathed my axe and severed the worms head with one swing. This was all too similar to how I had lost my mother 6 years ago. I put away my axe and carefully searched the corpse of my foe. I found very little of use to me, but I thought perhaps a talented crafter could make more use of it. So I picked up the various ores inside the animals stomach and made my way back to the auction house. I checked with a representative what the normal price of zinc ore was and was delighted to discover that it could net me upwards of 1000gil. With this I could easily afford armor fitting to survive another lizard attack. I handed over the ore and what seemed like my entire savings as a listing fee and was told to check in a few hours to see if anyone had bought it.
It was around this time that two adventurers approached me, they told me all about there adventures and from my visible excitement could tell I was a budding adventurer myself. The elder of the two, a fellow hume, handed me an adventurers coupon and instructed me to seek out a woman named Reet and show it to her. They made there way through the gate and I never saw them again....
Filled with enthusiasm, I headed to the Bastok Markets in search of Reet. I soon found her, just by the fountain, I handed over my adventurers coupon and she told me all about what the Republic of Bastok did for adventurers, like myself. She told me about Mog Houses provided free of charge, quests that I could complete if there was a local in need, even missions to help my country, just like Crying Wind had done. Triumphantly I returned to the Mines district and spoke to Master about what I had learned. He encouraged me to move into my Mog House and get a feeling of independence, but told me I was to check in with him regularly. He also pointed me in the direction of who would give me my first mission, it was a Hume man by the name of Rashid. I was excited about serving my country so I sprinted as fast as I could over to him. I was quickly disheartened when he told me that I was going to be an errand runner. I agreed to it, but cursed the man under my breath, this mission was below my level of ability.
It took my a little under an hour to find the man and return the report to the Presidents office. Unfortunately my curiosity had gotten the best of me and I had read the report before I returned it, fortunately it didn't seem to bother anyone too much, at least not to my knowledge. As I made my way back to the Mines district the sun started to come down, Crying Wind had warned me about the monsters that only come out under nightfall so I decided to play it safe and returned to see my mentor. When I arrived at his door I found a note informing me that my belongings were now all in my Mog House and I would be staying there from now on. I made my way over to the residential area and quickly found the single room apartment with my name on the door. I entered to find a floating teddy bear with wings that claimed to be my Moogle Kupo. I still don't quite know what that is. I soon learned he was an invaluable asset, he could store things I didn't want to carry around, and even change my specialty to a number of other basic jobs. I would try my hand at them tomorrow. But for now, I needed some sleep....
