Current Plans

  • Guessing that it is not possible to raise to First-Class in a stat after reaching the "settling down" phase.
  • Switching to Basic Care to lower the strain on Amber to make testing of food satisfaction values easier, since ailments adversely affect satisfaction.
  • Narrow down satisfaction ranges on foods.

Daily Care

Unfortunately, I am a supreme idiot and saved over all my carefully taken notes up to retirement. Here are the important findings, as best as I can remember:

  • There is more at play here than a direct correlation between how much energy you leave a chocobo one day and how hungry it is the next.
At first, I assumed that the pixel amounts would be directly related, e.g. leaving a chocobo at 0-7 px would correspond to a Starving the next day. However, I left Brilliant Amber all the way up to 14px, and she was still Starving when I got the next day's report. Her care plan didn't seem to make a difference, as this happened on Basic Care.
Myrna tells me that conditions clearly have a draining affect on satisfaction, meaning a sick bird would end up hungrier than it would have been if it was well. I was never able to get conclusive results, but I do think I've come across personal evidence that backs it up. (Can't think of exact details at the moment, unfortunately.)
  • It is possible to drain a bird completely down to 0px.
Yeah, I've done it! Although it's not surprising, that means the visual representation of the energy bar is a 0-64 range, which doesn't divide nearly as nicely. Maybe this would explain why I have some strange results when measuring the number of pixels each activity drains.
  • The Stomachache condition seems to be triggered by not exercising your bird enough.
I only overfed Brilliant Amber once as a chick by accident, but she wasn't sick the next day. However, when I put her on Basic Care as an adult, she got regular stomachaches when I didn't perform any Active Care (and thus she didn't ever need to be fed).
  • It is possible to have both new beneficial conditions ("bursting with vitality" and "sparkling with intelligence" — these aren't the actual terms used in game, but I can't remember what they were called since I deleted my notes) at the same time.
I think which condition you get is probably related to the care plan you're on. Since Basic Care is the only one that boosts all four stats, I would guess this is the only care plan that would allow your chocobo to be both at once. (This was true for Brilliant Amber.)
  • Active Care affects stats.
Like carrots, it's certainly not nearly as significant the Care Plans you use, but I have solid proof that Active Care can raise Receptivity. Maybe it's the fact that Petit Soleil met another chocobo on one of his regular walks. Maybe Watch over the Chocobo is linked to Receptivity and not affection. The chocobo trainers hint that Compete against Others might be good for physical stats. In any case, Active Care is for more than just affection boosting (and keeping away the stomachaches).
Right now, I have two guesses:
  1. Even though the DATs seemed to indicate a 0-255 integer scale for chocobo stats, there are also fractions of each point.
  2. Foods (carrots) and Active Care, which don't seem to have a large effect, only give a small boost some of the time.
This could be linked to the "Fine Chocobo" message indicating when a carrot actually gives you the expected stat(s). Who knows how you would be able to tell if Active Care gives your chocobo a boost? (Some guesses: you gain mental stats (maybe just Receptivity) when your chocobo meets another chocobo on a walk; you gain physical stats when your chocobo Compete against Others; you gain the stat(s) related to a particular story when it inspires them.) Also, since food seems to lower opposing stats at the same time, it's possible Active Care does this as well.
  • Adult Care Plans are the only reasonable way to raise additional stats.
Once you get FC/FC in your dominant stats, you can use one of the opposing Adult care plans to build up one of the other stats. Since Endurance doesn't have a plan related to it, you can only feasibly work on Strength/Discernment.
