Historical Background
In Norse mythology, Valhalla is the hall of Odin, located in Asgard, the world of the Æsir (Norse gods). Valhalla is described as having walls made of spears, roofs made from shields, and benches and tables made from the breastplates of armor. Odin feasts here with the Einherjar (warriors who died valiantly on the battlefield). When Ragnarok comes, Odin and the Einherjar will depart from Valhalla for Vigrond, the final battlefield. Valhalla is derived from the Norse val + höll, meaning "hall of the slain". The original name was Valhöll, but it was mistranslated into English in the 1800s and the error has persisted.
