Historical Background

All imbued cells used in Salvage are named after various cloud formations.

Velum means “sail” in Latin (as in a ship’s sail) or “veil”, but in this context it appears to refer to cumulus velum, a variety of cumulus cloud or cumulonimbus velum, a variety of cumulonimbus cloud.

Cumulus velum

These are cumulus clouds (large puffy, cottony clouds) that is surrounded by a thin sheet-like cloud. An image can be found at this link [1]

Cumulonimbus velum

These are cumulonimbus clouds (rain-bearing cumulus clouds) that have a thin sheet-like cloud draped around it.
