Historical Background
All imbued cells used in Salvage are named after various cloud formations.
Virga is a meteorological term referring to rain that falls, but evaporates before reaching the ground. Virga often appears as dark streaks seen coming down from gray clouds off in the distance. Virga is more common in deserts than in other regions. Virga is Latin for “branch” or “twig”, though is also an acronym for “Variable Intensity Rain Gradient Aloft”. However, a lesser known definition of virga is as a category of cloud within a few common types of clouds.
Altocumulus virga
These are altocumulus clouds (small cottony clouds found high up, typically white with a small gray portion) which are producing virga. Altocumulus virga clouds are found between 6500- 20,000 feet up. Altocumulus clouds tend to form by convection in an unstable air layer.
Nimbostratus virga
These are nimbostratus clouds (dark blanket clouds) which are producing virga. Nimbostratus virga clouds are found 6000 feet or below. These clouds produce light to medium intensity rain over a large span of time (hours to a day or more). These form where warm moist air flows over cold air.
