Historical Background
Edit
The Zweihander (properly spelled Zweihänder) was a large 6 foot long/1.8m long two-handed sword used from the 1300s-1700 CE, primarily by the Landsknecht (Mercenaries from the Holy Roman Empire, notably hired by city-states in Italy). Zweihänder is German for “two-hander”. The specific Landsknecht who wielded it were the Doppelsöldner, mercenaries who received twice the standard pay because they were taking additional risk by fighting on the front line. They were primarily used to shatter pike shafts and injure or kill pikemen.
